Skincare DIY Do's & Don'ts
Baking soda, coconut oil, lemon juice, sugar scrubs... We’re walking through some of the most common DIY skincare ingredients and why they might be doing more harm than good. From pH disruption to long-term barrier damage, here’s what we don’t recommend using on your skin and what to try instead.
1.
DON'T:
Baking Soda
It’s gritty and far too alkaline. Baking soda may give a “squeaky clean” feel, but it disrupts your skin’s pH and damages its protective barrier over time.
DO THIS INSTEAD:
Any of our exfoliation options! Our ionic charged clay masks and Coffee Face Polish will support your skin barrier when used correctly.
2.
DON'T:
Lemon Juice
Lemon juice might seem like a vitamin C rich idea, but its acidity and can damage your skin and lead to sensitivity or burns.
DO THIS INSTEAD:
Use our Balancing Toner Mist with our Awake Coffee Serum for a vitamin C packed option that is much more effective and not damaging.
3.
DON'T:
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar may sound like a natural toner, but it's far too acidic for regular facial use and can weaken your skin barrier over time.
DO THIS INSTEAD:
Use our Balancing Toner Mist to support your skin barrier. Formulated with your skins PH in mind, it cools, soothes, and supports product absorption.
4.
DON'T:
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil may feel moisturizing, but it’s an occlusive & very comedogenic. It can clog pores and often leads to breakouts.
DO THIS INSTEAD:
Instead, opt for lighter, non-pore-clogging oils like organic and cold pressed jojoba or argan. Better yet, use any of our serums, body oils, or cleansing oil.
5.
DON'T:
Facial Sugar Scrub
Sugar might feel satisfying, but it can cause microtears that weaken your barrier. The sugar content can also feed acne causing bacteria on the skin.
DO THIS INSTEAD:
Use our Coffee Face Polish for a vitamin packed, botanical exfoliation experience that leaves your skin so soft without any concerns of barrier damage.
6.
DON'T:
Toothpaste for Acne
Toothpaste contains harsh ingredients like menthol and hydrogen peroxide that can irritate, burn, and dry out your skin.
DO THIS INSTEAD:
Use a herbal spot treatment like our Blemish Balm or use any of our clay masks as an acne treatment. No harsh ingredients, just nature balancing your skin.
